Reading At Scremerston

 Scremerston’s Reading Vision

At Scremerston we aim to provide a reading curriculum that fosters a love of reading through a creative, broad and balanced approach. We believe that language and literacy are fundamental in building the foundations for success.

We have developed a cohesive reading curriculum with a clear skills progression from the Early Years through to Key Stage 1 and Key Stage Two, ensuring that children are sufficiently challenged and supported to allow them to prepare for their next stage in their education. Using the context of our school, we have also placed a strong importance on opportunities for oracy and are developing further opportunities to extend this using by doing 'lunchtime questions' for children to discuss at their tables over lunch and sharing their books and stories with children in other classes.

At Scremerston First School we used the phonics progamme, Read Write Inc to teach children to read. All staff are trained in this systemic progamme and deliver it daily to children for 30 minutes.

Children work their way through set 1, 2 and 3 sounds and words as well as guided reading. Children are grouped according to their assessments which take place at the end of each half term. Their reading books are also given based on their assessments so that their phonic ability is matched suitable to their reading books.

Set 1

Set 1 includes learning to read the sounds below in small steps, along with green words that match these sounds.

Set 2

Set 3

Once children have reached the end of the Read Write Inc programme children start Cracking Comprehension. This teaches the skills and strategies they need to successfully explain their understanding of a wide range of texts.

Children in year 1-4 access 'Spelling Shed' whereby children learn spelling patterns through activities and games. This is also accessed at home as part of childrens expected homework.

World Book Day 2024

This world book day we did 'dress as a word' and story in a jar.

Dress as a word

This was to encourage lots of new and excited vocabulary. Can you guess what our words are?

Story in a jar

The children were challenged to create their favourite story in a jar. We have some very creative ideas!
