Careers Week at Scremerston Primary
WOW! We have had a fantastic time this week finding out about lots of different types of careers!
Thank you to all of our visitors who have told us lots about the different jobs they do and the skills needed to do these jobs!
It is so important that our children realise that there are so many options and so many routes in life!

Tree Planting
Our children loved helping Luke & Alex plant trees in the village as part of restoring the areas damaged by Storm Arwen!
What a priveledge it is to be part of the regeneration of our local environment and a source of pride for our children who in years to come can say 'I helped plant those trees in the village'.
The children learned lots about the forest life cycle and where timber goes after trees are felled.
Well done everyone!

National Number Day

For 'National Number Day' we invited grown ups in to school to spend some time with their children doing some number activities and playing some number games! The number scavenger hunt was a big hit!

Remembrance Day 2024

We observed our one minute silence for Remembrance Day at the War Memorial and Mrs Rooney played the bagpipes to end our silence.

Saltpan Rocks

Ash class went to Cocklawburn Beach to take a closer look at the Saltpanrocks. A local artist and geologist was there to share their knowledge of why the area is of importance. The children have learnt a lot of fascinating facts, have done lots of brilliant follow up work and have been really interested in this project!

College Valley Trip
Our Ash class children had a fantastic visit to College Valley!
The children loved searching for minibeasts in the river, finding lots of tadpoles as well as mayfly & stonefly larvae.
Later on in the day, the children made artifact museums using egg cartons.
The group also walked 'a million miles' up a big hill! The view at the top was worth the million miles!
Thank you to The College Valley Estate for inviting us and guiding us on this lovely trip.

The Hirsel Trip

Our Ash class children had a fantastic trip to The Hirsel. They took part in lots of "field" activities to understand where our food comes from, the importance of a balanced diet and the vital role that farming plays in food production. They then baked their own apple scones using the ingredients from this mornings activities!

Pictorial Photography Visit

Oak class had a visit from Sarah from Pictorial photography. She showed us her photographs of dogs and different human jobs they might have before we discussed our own pets and what jobs they might have if they were humans. They were very creative in the ideas they came up with!

Following on from our work about Lowry earlier this half term, the children took part in a creative dance workshop. The main focus was collaboration and creativity which the children did fantastic with. They performed their sequences to Oak Class who were an exceptional audience. Well done!

Lowry Workshop

Linda and Beth from Berwick Archives, visited Ash Class to share with us what life was like in the 1930's when the famous Painter L S Lowry visited Berwick. We used maps and photographs to discover just how much Berwick has changed over the past 100 years!

Whole School Trip to Newcastle

💜 The whole school ventured off to Newcastle and each class had a very different experience while in the city! The trip was a huge success and all of our children were a credit to our school by demonstrating fantastic behaviour! 💜
📖 Oak class visited Seven Stories and enjoyed listening to a fascinating story teller, they had great fun getting to try on and use different props from different stories! First Lawrence read us stories. He was funny and very good at story telling where we had lots of laughs. After lunch we looked at the Judith Kerr exhibition and read some of the Mog stories. Then we did some dressing up and enjoyed the story props before it was time for the bus back to school. 📖
🛡 Ash class visited the Roman Fort, Segedunum. We visited Hadrian’s wall and reenacted being Roman soldiers and threw balls as pretend rocks from the top of a replica roman wall. We got to try on some of the amour and feel just how heavy it was. Poor Miss O’Mara had to put it all on - it was very very heavy! We dressed up and acted like roman soldiers and marched, with a shield in our left hand and a spear in our right hand. Everyone got to try on replica Roman helmets, tunics and belts. We even learnt the Roman soldier oath.
"We will do whatever may be ordered and be ready at every command". 🛡
🌎 Sycamore class experienced travelling the city by Metro on the way up to the Great North Museum and were fascinated by the Planetarium! They also got to explore the rest of the museum learning lots of science facts! We read maps, bought tickets, rode on the Metro, ate a civilised lunch!, watched a fascinating show in the Planetarium, enjoyed exploring the museum and found out loads of interesting things (and we didn't stop talking once!!!!!) 🌎

Fire Brigade Visit

Wow! We had a super exciting visit from Blue Watch of Berwick Community Fire Station yesterday! Did you know, a member of Blue Watch used to attend our school?!

The team delivered a very informative assembly on keeping safe in and around home, staying safe when out and about, road safety, what the Fire Brigade are called out for (not just extinguishing fires!!) and how to call them out when needed!

Our children gave some brilliant contributions to the assembly and also learned lots of new helpful tips and useful information! One of them being...If you don't have a working smoke alarm in your home, you can contact Berwick Fire Station and they will come out to fit one for you for FREE!

Two lucky children also raced Blue Watch to put on the full kit worn by the team and guess who won...the Scremerston First School team!!

Everyone then had the chance to explore the fire engine and equipment, sit inside, ask questions and even have a go at using the fire hose!

Thank you so much to Blue Watch for not only delivering important information but for inspiring our youngsters! Hopefully we'll see more Scremerston First School pupils working and volunteering at Berwick Fire Station in the future!
